What does an Engineer do?

Engineers are problem solvers. You use mathematics, science and business knowledge to find cost-effective and safe solutions to difficult problems. As a top-level advisor on technical aspects of operations, you put your brain power to the test every single day. There are many fields of engineering and the electricity sector relies mostly on electrical, mechanical and civil engineers.

Computers are an engineer’s most essential tool. They are used for design, project management, data collection and analysis, simulations and much more. They allow you to improve efficiency by measuring and optimizing the performance of complex systems and processes. All this number crunching means that you need to possess superior analytical and math skills, of course. You must also demonstrate leadership and good people skills in order to effectively manage teams and interact with outside experts.

Large capital projects such as the construction of a hydroelectric dams, power generating stations and transmission lines are usually designed and managed by engineers. You must estimate the time, cost and resources necessary to complete projects and draw up design specifications and construction schedules to get the job done. As an engineer, you have a lot of responsibility, but you can rest assured that your hard work and creativity is rewarded by some of the top salaries in the entire electrical sector.

 

What’s the commitment?

It generally takes 4 years to complete a university engineering degree. Once you have your degree, you must register with your provincial association of professional engineers and get three to four years of practical engineering experience under the supervision of a professional engineer. The final step is to pass the professional practice exam in order to be granted the P.Eng., your license to practice engineering.

 

What do I need to apply?

You need a high school diploma including grade 12 English, Chemistry, Math and Physics
Your grade averages must meet the university’s admission requirements.

Typically employers in the electricity sector will hire engineering grads and work with them to complete the requirements for full recognition.
